The cone family of is one of the most attractive and interesting for its variety of colours and geometric designs. Cones are carnivorous and use a real poisonous harpoon to capture their prey. The venom, which contains conotoxins, has a similar effect to curare and produces almost immediate paralysis of the prey. The most poisonous species are Conus geographus, Conus tulipa and Conus striatus. Other poisonous species for humans, which can cause death within 2 to 6 hours, include Conus pennaceus, Conus textile, Conus aulicus, Conus magus and Conus marmoreus.
