Shark Nursery

Discover how some sharks are born

Hanging among the corals and marine plants, you can observe up close the shark eggs, also known as mermaid’s purses because of their distinctive shape.

Species such as the small-spotted catshark (Scyliorhinus canicula) or the nursehound (Scyliorhinus stellaris) lay eggs with an elongated, semi-transparent capsule, which allows you to observe how the embryo develops inside.

A perfect design to protect the embryo

The egg capsule has tendrils at its ends, which allow the eggs to remain entangled among corals and marine vegetation.

In this way, they remain anchored to their surroundings and avoid being swept away by marine currents, increasing their chances of survival.

A unique educational experience: witness the birth of a shark

Look closely: you may be able to see the small sharks moving inside the egg or even spot one that has already hatched swimming along the bottom of the aquarium.

A unique opportunity to discover up close the life cycle of sharks and understand the importance of their protection and conservation.
