This fish lives associated with reefs in a depth range of between 1 and 75 m. It is a solitary species; juveniles usually live in caves with a high population of invertebrates while adults swim openly. They feed on sea urchins, crabs and other crustaceans, molluscs and tunicates.

Triggerfishes have a strong spine on their dorsal part that can be raised to intimidate predators or remain stuck in rocks.
